Packaging

The second queue of digital workflow is Packaging. The Packaging queue verifies the selected bottle(s) or pack(s) matches the drug selected in the prescription.

The Packaging queue verifies the selected bottle(s) or pack(s) matches the drug selected in the prescription. Depending on how your Workflow Preferences are set, Packaging can be completed:

  • After Data Entry (e.g., Data Entry > Packaging > Technical Validation > Clinical Review)

  • After Clinical Review (e.g., Data Entry > Clinical Review > Packaging > Technical Validation)

To process a prescription through the Packaging queue:

  1. From the Workbench, select the Packaging queue. Prescriptions that are currently in the Packaging queue display in the prescription grid.

  2. Select the prescription(s) that you are packaging.

  3. Select Process. The prescription opens in the Packaging window.

If you have the Data Entry and Packaging queues selected on your workstation, the Packaging window will open automatically once the prescription has been adjudicated.

If you have the Packaging queue and the previous queue selected on your workstation, the Packaging window will open automatically once the previous step is completed.

  4. Enter the following information:

    • UPC - either manually enter the information or scan the package. A message displays under the UPC field if the UPC matches or does not match the DIN or pack size selected.

If Require UPC (Packaging) is turned off in the Drug Folder, the UPC field is disabled and not required to complete Packaging.

For drugs added locally, you can turn off Require UPC (Packaging) in the Drug Folder to bypass the requirement for a UPC when Packaging a prescription.

    • Lot - the lot # on the package.

    • Expiry (MM/DD/YYYY) - the expiry date on the package. This can be entered with or without dashes (-) or slashes (/). Propel Rx will assume that the dates you enter are in the formats MMYY, MMDDYY, or MMDDYYYY. If you only enter month and year, Propel Rx will assume the last day of the month as the expiry date.

The format MMYYYY is not supported. If you enter 012025, the expiry date will be Jan 20, 2025, not Jan 2025.

      For example:

      • 0125 will be interpreted as Jan 2025 (in Workflow Details, it will appear as Jan 31, 2025)

      • 013125 will be interpreted as Jan 31, 2025

      • 01312025 will be interpreted as Jan 31, 2025

    • Qty - the quantity from the package that is being dispensed. Automatically populated based on the pack size.

Only UPC and Qty are mandatory when packaging. For tracking purposes, it is recommended the Lot and Expiry (MM/DD/YYYY) fields are also populated.

  5. Select Add. The package information is added to Package Details.

  6. Repeat steps 4 - 5 if additional packages are required. For more information, see Multiple Packs.

Once all required packages have been scanned, ALL ITEMS HAVE BEEN PACKAGED displays.

  7. Once all packages have been scanned, select Package. Vial labels are printed.

Once all packages have been scanned, select Package.

    • If your pharmacy is using Zebra printers, vial labels are printed.

If you package a prescription and then rebill it for a lesser quantity, remove the previously entered rows in the Package Details section before proceeding to package the new quantity.

Additional Scenarios

The Packaging window is a robust feature of Propel Rx, considering different scenarios your pharmacy may encounter when packaging a prescription and offers easy and efficient solutions.

Next Steps?

Once the prescription has been packaged, it moves into the Technical Validation queue to be reviewed for accuracy. Click here for steps about technical validation.

Once the prescription has been packaged, it moves into the next queue as outlined in your Workflow Tab. Click on the links below depending on what the next queue is for your pharmacy.

  • Technical Validation

  • No other queues activated - the prescription is completed and the hardcopy (half labels) or vial labels (Thermal labels) print.

The prescription will appear in the Pick Up/Delivery tile if:

    • Your pharmacy has POS Integration activated.

    • Your pharmacy does not have POS Integration activated but the prescription is a diem health prescription, allowing you to send notifications to your patient that the prescription is ready. For more information, see Rx Ready diem health Notifications.

The prescription may display in the Dialogue tile depending on:

    • Your Workflow Preferences for E-Dialogue

    • The Dialogue Required checkbox in Technical Validation or Clinical Review
